Incidentally after having a cuppa at Russian Tea Time, my new favorite tea in the entire world is Genmaicha, which is green tea mixed with toasted rice. It’s like drinking a cup of really good popcorn.
(I actually found out about toasted rice tea doing research for the Bucky-and-goats fic; there’s a version from Madagascar that doesn’t include the green tea, and I was SUPER EXCITED to see it on the Tea Time tea menu, and it was EXACTLY as awesome as I had hoped it would be.)
Ranovola!!!!… It’s the rice tea they make in Madagascar and I miss it so much!
After cooking huge pots of rice they boil water in the pot with the burned rice layer at the bottom and you get a tasty toasted rice beverage and a much easier to clean pot!
I’ve tried to recreate it but have never managed to do it properly. I think you really need a much bigger pot of rice than I ever make.
That’s the one! I was googling for unique African beverages that Bucky’s Wakandan neighbor Nobomi could be drinking, and that’s the beverage that really popped for me, even though I don’t know whether Madagascar’s food culture permeates very far into mainland Africa.
I’ve seen some recipes for it – someone did a real proper test-kitchen on the Genmaitcha version – but I know it’s a tricky process if you’re doing it deliberately, so I was thrilled to find it on the tea menu so that I could try out at least a version of it. And Adagio Teas sells a version of Genmaitcha as well, so I’m gonna pick up some for home consumption!
