I went to high school but otherwise have very little formal education.  Never took an art history class or a class in medieval gothic architecture, though imma peg that at hovering around 1300 or so.

we learned about these in the seventh grade during our medieval history unit and lemme tell you there is nothing in this world more delighted than a bunch of giggling twelve-year-olds repeating ‘buttresses’ every thirty seconds
